The Bay County Sheriff’s Office issued a scam alert this afternoon in regards to a scam hitting the Bay County area.

The BCSO has received numerous complaints about a phone call scam from a man stating he represents the Social Security Administration, and must inform the intended victim their social security number has been compromised. In order to avoid a break in benefits, the victim must purchase a specific amount of green dot gift cards from a discount store to pay a fine.

One elderly victim in Bay County purchased $500 in gift cards before realizing it was a scam.

The Social Security Administration is not making any calls to alert recipients of Social Security benefits that their number has been compromised. No governmental agency uses gift cards to pay fees or fines.
