The Junior Deputy & Law Enforcement Explorer program Is founded on the belief that today's children are tomorrow's leaders. The primary goals of the Junior Deputy and Law Enforcement Explorer programs are to provide a better understanding of law enforcement and the justice system in the United States.

These programs also promote a better understanding between our youth and all law enforcement agencies in the county. Guest speakers and demonstrations, supported by tours of local criminal justice facilities acquaint Junior Deputies with a look at real law enforcement work. Classes are also provided in BB/pellet gun training, gun safety, first aid, water, CPR, court room procedures and basic law enforcement.

The post conducts a basic and advanced training program for Explorers, which covers a diversity of law enforcement operations and procedures. After completing the basic academy, the Explorers are eligible to work with the Sheriff's Office employees in the records section, crime scene unit or in the courthouse with a bailiff. Upon reaching the rank of Corporal, they may work in the Warrants Division, under the supervision of a law enforcement officer. After completing a training section in Warrants, they may qualify to work alone in this section at any time, as long as, it dos not interfere with school. Structured programs and training to facilitate their interests in law enforcement is provided by agency members/personnel. The knowledge gained from their training is put into place when the Explorers attend various competitions throughout the state.

Explorers and Junior Deputies contribute, to the community over 3000 hours per year,  participating in many civic projects such as; March of Dimes, American Heart Association, Project 25 Christmas Program, Boys & Girls Club of Bay County, Gulf Coast Horse Show, Early Childhood Services Kid Fest, Cops N' Kids, Gulf Coast Triathlon, Bicycle Safety program, Neighborhood Bicycle Patrol, Teen Court, Child ID fingerprinting program, school and church fun days, Billfish Tournament and the annual Junior Deputy Gospel Sing. Both Junior Deputies and Law Enforcement Explorers play a major role in the Bay County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony each year. These youth also, participate in parades, community and agency events assisting with pedestrian and vehicular direction, as well as, other non-confrontational assignments.

These youth function under the direct supervision of their law enforcement coordinator,  post advisors or designated agency members and they have been given proper training for that assignment. These year round programs provide a safe and educational alternative gathering place for Bay County youth.

Both Explorers and Junior Deputies wear distinctive uniforms to provide a uniformity at meetings and to identify them to the public and other law enforcement officers at public functions. In order for these Junior Deputies and Law Enforcement Explorers to attend conferences, competitions, state meetings and purchase uniforms they must work to earn the largest portion of the money needed to participate. They accomplish this by community donations, parking details, t-shirt sales and the annual gospel sing
