Investigation Of Construction Site Unearths Numerous Illegal Aliens

Last week a Bay County Sheriffs Deputy went to a construction site at 4101 Magnolia Beach Drive to look for a man that was a suspect in an earlier theft. Upon his arrival the Deputy witnessed numerous Hispanic males running from the job site through the yards of surrounding houses. When a resident confronted one of the Hispanic males in his backyard, the male stated that he was hiding from INS. The Deputy relayed this information to his supervisor, who than relayed it to the Sheriff.

At approximately 9:00 AM this morning Deputies from the Bay County Sheriffs Office arrived at the construction site at 4101 Magnolia Beach Drive to investigate the possibility of undocumented workers.

Upon their arrival 6 arrests were made for charges of fleeing and eluding, possession of false and forged documents, and resisting arrest without violence. 14 other Hispanic males were apprehended and taken to the INS office at the Panama City Port for processing. Four other Hispanic males were stopped in a pick up truck behind the Movie Gallery on Thomas Drive by a Sheriffs Deputy. The driver was taken into custody, the other three climbed over the fence onto the Navy Base. The Sheriffs Office immediately notified the Navy Base Police. At this time Base Police has apprehended one of the fence jumpers.

The superintendent of the job site a Mr. Steven R. Fudge is an employee of Cambridge Construction, Inc. and Summit Construction Company. He was cited for employing undocumented workers (FS 448.09), which is a civil fine of $500.00 for the first violation regardless of the number of aliens.
